Kelly Slater wins Trestles world championship round.

I had been watching how the competitors reacted when they came back to the beach after their heats in this annual contest.  I wanted to tell a time based story on a single image.  So I studied where Kelly would come in and kept my fingers crossed that he win go all the way to the finals and win.  Sure enough he did.  Since the beach at Trestles is covered with slippery boulders I knew not many people would walk far in the middle of them.  So I knew that if I could get slightly past his point of entry, I could shoot him as he walked back into the waiting crowd.  I was the first one there and caught him right as he found out that he had won.

A month later, a friend from Australia sends me a page from Tracks magazine.  With the caption... "Hey isn't that you there on the right?"  Sure enough, here I am, shooting that very sequence...
